Attended World Premiere of John Carter

I do not usually blog about movies nowadays much because I hardly attended any. However, recently, I was somehow lucky enough to get hold of tickets to the World Premiere of John Carter, based on novels which was written say, yes exactly 1 century ago by Edgar Rice Burroughs. When I first viewed the trailer, I was amazed and I thought avatar kinda ripped it off this movie since it was created 100 years ago. However, I must say I was kind of disappointed when I saw the Disney label on it because basically it would say : "No blood, no  extreme violence and definitely no sex!" Well I can't say I was totally disappointed with the Pirates of the Caribbeans, so maybe I should give it a chance.

To be honest, this was not the first movie based on the first book "A Princess from Mars". In fact in 2009, there was a STV movie made with the same title, which obviously flopped, gaining a 3.2 / 10 on IMdb. I was fortunate enough not to have watched that. I had not read any of the books too, so this movie is a fresh start for me.

Firstly, I must say, I am impressed with the 3D. It had came so far and in this movie, its not just cosmetics. The 3D effects actually tries to put the user into the world by feeling it. The story line is kinda old, but what would you expect from a 100 years old tale. However, you can see how this old story could had brought about others like Narnia, Stars Wars and Avatar. The creature created are not anything we had not seen before, but there are believable and some more cute than others. But I guess in the end, the leads had put in good effort into their characters and it eventually plays out well in the whole.

I really enjoyed the show and look forward to a sequel soon.

A Deeper Look at SuckerPunch The Movie

Ok, I finally got to watch it and it blows me away. Before you continue reading, I would want to stress that the below are all SPOILERS! If you had not watched the movie, I strongly suggest you do so before you read on because otherwise, you won't understand what I am talking about anyway. Also, you should catch the 3 short animated trailers SPOILERS below!!

Here is my post to links for the 3 short animated features:
http://nemesisv.blogspot.com/2011/03/suckerpunch-animated-shorts.html

OK, I think this film is really going to be a cult movie very much like Pulp Fiction and Matrix. Some will not agree, but there are many many deep levels to talk about. First, lets set some terms. I group the reality into 3 levels. The first, being the asylum. The second, the brothel and the third will consist of the 3 other worlds - The Nazis, The Dragon and The Robots. Now, before I go on, I want to talk about the number 5 in SuckerPunch. I read somewhere it took 5 years to cook up the whole SuckerPunch movie and so there are a lot of things in 5s. 5 Heroines, 5 worlds, 5 days to lobotomize, 5 items etc... I think Zack wanted it that way. They could had made 5 level 3 worlds for 5 items, but of course the film would be too long.

So, let me talk about the 5 worlds. The asylum is what we all agree should be the reality. I think the brothel is a world created by Sweet Pea as she mentioned she is the star of the show and then later introduced to BabyDoll. The idea of using music as a therapy is also first applied to Sweet Pea. After BabyDoll was introduced to the brothel, she had her own way to "dance" out the other reality necessary for them to complete their mission. I actually had the thought that BabyDoll was Sweet Pea "Guardien Angel", but I kinda think its Wise Men in the end that was her angel. So, there is a possibility that BabyDoll was nothing more than a split imagination of Sweet Pea, because you will notice that Sweet Pea and BabyDoll has many in common especially the sister relationship.

Back to the remaining 3 worlds. Each of these world represents a conflict, especially if you had watched the 3 animated shorts. The first Nazi worlds is a conflict about the living and the dead. This could had been brought out by the trauma of death of BabyDoll's mother. The second world of the Orcs and Dragon represents a conflict of the religion where the Orcs believe in their "god" - The Dragon and the human denies it. I would interpret it as BabyDoll's blaming that a true "god" did not exist or else all the suffering will not had been rushing to her like a tsunami. In the end, we also see that BabyDoll killed the "god" (Dragon) as a form of denial. The third world of the robots. In the shorts, it was revealed that it was a conflict between the rich and the poor, at least in physical cash. This is probably a result of BabyDoll's father selling her out for money.

After looking at this, I was very inclined to believe that BabyDoll exist and is not part of Sweet Pea imagination, until. I reach the end. After being lobotomized, the movie purposely did not want o reveal BabyDoll's face giving the audience some expectation that it could be of Sweet Pea's instead. Which then would really be a SuckerPunch! But in the end it show that it was of BabyDoll and not Sweet Pea. So maybe BabyDoll did exist.

Now, there is also the never ending question whether Amber, Blondie and Rocket really existed. I guess maybe and maybe not. I did recall seeing a few girls fight in the first scene when BabyDoll was introduced to the theater, but are those girls our heroines? I guess not. But Rocket especially was in many way a shadow of BabyDoll's sister whom she had failed to protect and thus dies in the level 3 world. Their existence however does makes the obtaining of the items much easier to explain. Sweet Pea or BabyDoll would had more trouble getting all those item on them own. The question remains then is, did they really died? Remember in the end, to Dr Gorski, there is only mentioned of her setting a fire and letting one patient (Sweet Pea) escape. I think if 3 patients died, it would be worth mentioning. So I did not think the 3 heroines died. At least not physically. They could had been lobotomized, but it was never mentioned that they faced this fate, especially one scene where it was mentioned to BabyDoll that that's her own problem, not theirs. So, we can simply even imagine they got taken away and isolated and thus could not continue their mission and thus have to die away in the level 2 world. Of course, if we read that these 3 heroines are not even real, then its just fragments of Sweet Pea's or BabyDoll's imagination that died off.

The 5 items was pretty clear, especially the map and the lighter. their purpose was to create the fire that unlock the main door and guide our heroines out. The knife was to defend, but ironically it was used both as a defence and as an attack to obtain the key. The only thing left was the 5th item which was the ultimate sacrifice. If BabyDoll was unreal, it would means that Sweet Pea had to make her final sacrifice to give up her last fragment of imagination before she leaves the asylum. I am more convinced that Sweet Pea did really made the escape in the end. And another segment that supported the fact that BabyDoll was not real was that BabyDoll had to made the last sacrifice to set herself free. In the end, she was lobotomized. One way to explain her getting the freedom is through Sweet Pea. And it seems that the whole thing may had been Sweet Pea imagination because of the Wise Man character. It doesn't make sense for BabyDoll to meet him where the only person that saw him in reality is Sweet Pea at the very end. This could only had been possible is all the other characters were created by Sweet Pea to help herself escape in the end. It was mentioned by Rocket that Sweet Pea came in because of her and that is a suggestion that Sweet Pea is totally sane. Well, but every insane person I met says he or she is not insane. Could this be what Sweet Pea cooks up too?

We all know the whole movie is about Sweet Pea and not BabyDoll as the film suggested throughout, before the end. I guess this was deliberate as well. Well, thats the SuckerPunch (SP=Sweet Pea)! I hope you are not more confused after reading my thoughts. Of course, all the above are only my interp[retation. Feel free to share yours in the comments!

Tell Me Now (What You See) King Arthur 2004 SoundTrack ~ Moya Brennan

Long Ago,
Your name a shadow,
In my dreams, the white,
Brave still searching,
Raining Winds, fall apart.
I believe, your heart.

Tell me now,
What you see.
Tell me what you feel,
Now you're here.

Tell me.
Tell me now,
What you know.
Never let me go.
Tell me now,
What you see.

Who Cries from the hill?
The mist creeps from your eyes,
Your banner will promise,
Let's remember the start,
I believe, your heart.

Tell me now,
What you know.
Never let me go.
Tell me what,
You see.
Tell me now,
What you see.
Tell me what you feel,
Now your here, tell me,
Tell me now.
What you know,
Never let me go.
Tell me now,

Long Ago,
Your name a shadow,
In my dreams, the white,
Brave still searching,
Raining Winds, fall apart.
I believe, your heart.

Tell me now,
What you see.
Tell me what you feel,
Now you're here.
Tell me.
Tell me now,
What you know.
Never let me go.
Tell me now,
What you see.

Who Cries from the hill?
The mist creeps from your eyes,
Your banner will promise,
Let's remember the start,
I believe, your heart.

Tell me now,
What you know.
Never let me go.
Tell me what,

Tell me now,
What you see.
Tell me what you feel,
Now your here, tell me,
Tell me now.

CJ7

A lot of people say this is BAD. Even worse than the 1/2 stars only Ah Long Pte Ltd. How can it be? There is only 1 way to find out.

I have no choice but to watch this in chinese here. One thing I must say is that this is not as funny as his previous movies. This is a quite serious movie. Stephen Chow no longer plays the “hero” or even the main character in this movie. In fact, the movie was pretty sad at the end. Maybe that is why many people find this bad. Their expectation was complete wrong. But I find that this is NOT a bad movie. I haven’t watch Ah Long Pte Ltd and do not intent to waste $8 watching it in the cinema. But I seriously think people should set the expectation right before going into this one.

This is close to the E.T. type of show, a bit of jokes here and there, but generally serious. The main characters are from a very poor family and many of the things I find people laughing all over are in fact quite sick because everyone here live in luxury (at least have the $8 to enjoy this show in the cinema). But in fact, such family (and even worse) do exist. That is probably me thinking too deeply into it. CJ7 is cute and if there is such a thing, I won’t mind queuing overnight for it. That for sure.

I would advise you to go watch it, but prepare youurself. Do not expect to laugh until you have a stomachache. Expecting something a bit more meaningful and bring something back for thoughts. There are quite some “punch” at various other movies as well, so it definitely is good if you had watched them.

March 18th... There is a reason to live till then...

Yes, you must survive and not let anything happen to you to impact your eyes so that you can watch these 8 films (to die for), hahaahah! I am not joking. The After Dark Horrorfest 2007 movies are released on that day in USA. You can preorder now from amazon at (below) USD$19.90 each. If you recalled the ADH 2006, it was fantastic to have 8 damn good independent movies (ok, maybe except PENNY DREADFUL which might be the only one that will import here...). But I hold high hopes for the 2007 ones and to be truthful, I did catch some shots from the so call TS version of 2 of them, but I am not interested to ruined my inprint for this. anyway, here are the 8 shows for 2007!

GrindHouse Review

Finally caught BOTH these movies. I must say I enjoy Planet Terror a lot more. Both are still good in my opinion. There were a lot of flaming on Quentin Taratino's Death Proof. I had to watch it for myself. I guess many people did not know what this movie is trying to do. Its got a little of everything in it and it was purposely produced without CGI in plain camera good-old-days style. This is the theme that was carried out through the 2 parts in Death Proof.

Death Proof talks about a maniac car killer with a buff up "death-proof" vehicle. Well, it is. As a spoiler. He was not killed in the car. It consist of 2 segment and its almost like 2 movies already. Part 1 to introduce the character and what he do (not why though) and part 2 is where he met his match and finally pay the ultimate price. There are lots of conversation and that was what most people did not like. But I quite enjoyed it though. It may be silly bimbo talk, but I guess its satire in a different form. It enjoyable to me at least.

Planet Terror, on the other hand was handled like another zombie movie, except its much much better. There is moments of action, love, horror, violence and even a little part and bits about brotherhood. I love the tag "Two Against the World". I guess that sound nice. I don't want to say too much about Planet Terror, because I think you should just catch it yourself. If you like zombie movie, you will not be disappointed.

Resident Evil : Extinction Review

Ok, this is the 2nd movie I am going to talk about. Resident Evil : Extinction. I am a great fan of the game and only managed to miss the Nintendo version so far. I played it even when it was call BioHazard on PSX. Now, the movie. The action was not bad at all for RE2, although RE1 lacks something. And from the trailers, which I has posted earlier, I expected some cool actions in RE3. Hell, I was so wrong. At least here in Singapore.

Despite the rating of NC16, this movie was cut into bits and pieces. The action, not there. The gore, what gore? And there is absolutely no nudity, well, not that I want to see Milla. Its a personal preference, but I seriously think I had nightmare after watching here in RE2. Skinny. Ok, so maybe the story save the day. I don't think so. Its basically a short story where it doesn't matters or not you watch RE3. There is no new development.
The show was ok, beating the shit out of the radio station people and dogs. Then until it came to Las Vegas, which all my friends in USA told me was good. It wasn't here. If you had watched the Red Band trailer I posted, you will have enjoyed that trailer more than this show. The story was pretty weak, leaving the loose end to ensure there is RE4. BTW, I heard Milla is going to be a mom, so I am not too looking forward to a near future for RE4.
This show did pretty well in the states, and I really want to feel that way too, but unfortunately I went to watch it here. Take my advise, skip this and watch it oversea uncut or get the Code 1 Director Cut DVD when its out. Its probably a better experience.
Oh, btw, our suspicion is confirmed. SONY is UMBRELLA. Just take a look at the Umbrella Vaio in the movie. Who else makes Vaio?

Shoot Em Up

This is the first of the 2 movies I am going to talk about this week. One of them is the thumb ups and this is the one. Shoot Em Up. Emm, what a crap title I first thought. Until I saw Clive Owen's interview saying that he agree that this is the most violent movie ever made. I had watched many of Clive's movie and I must say I enjoy his acting. But this one is really different. His character is really comically cool.

I thing is that you can't take this show seriously. Despite all the violent, it is rather comical. There is a lot of references to other shows and the carrot and bugs bunny is really laughable. However, the message is clear. Carrot is good for health only if taken internally. :) And I did not know that bullet proof vest comes in baby sizes. :) But despite all the ridiculous stuff, it has great action sequences. If you love John Woo's A Better Tomorrow, you will love this.
This show is M18 here and I think its pretty uncut with the blood, gore and nudity in. But seriously, if you are in for a fun action movie, catch this one. This is the only movie I gave 10/10 in IMDB this year.

Japanese Film Festival 2007 - True Romance

The Japanese Film Festival 2007 started yesterday and I was there on the first day to catch 2 of the R21 screening. Not that I choose the R21, but I find the PG rather tame as compare to works from Takeshi Miike or other of my favourite directors.

The first was "Vengence is Mine" (復讐するは我にあり/ Fukushû suruwa wareniari). This is a really good story about a jailbird who returned to his life and find many things has changed. The only things that has not changed is his way of criminal life. With the betrayal of his wife to his own father, that send him on a rampage to kill 5 other persons befoer he was finally caught. He impersonate university lecturer, lawyers and even fake his own death along the way. This is long before we had "Catch me if you can" in 1982.
The romance is this show is probably between the inn keeper lady and our anti hero as well as his wife and his father. Its sick in a certain way, but the theme of a hopeless love surrounds this show.

Tjhe 2nd movie I caught was "The Ballad of Narayama" (楢山節考 / Narayama Bushiko). This is the story about olden days Japanese in a cold village in the mountains where law is not what we know of today. The villagers has their own law and believes and along the show, we saw the brutal murder of a family by burying them alive, killing of old people who has reach age of 70 and others. This show portrail the hardness in survival against natural in this poor vilalge, where food is of high importance. Much more than even life itself. Sacrifice were made as a result in the most sad and cruel way. There is NO romance in this show if you asked me and the R21 is really quite unncessary. There is savage sex though, if thats what it is for. Sex just for the sake of relief rather than passion.

I had not caught anything today because the title did not attact me much. However, since the theme is True Romance, I would had hope they brought in really good love story such as "Inugami", "The Lost Eden" and other classics. In this next whole week, there is still movies running at night on weekdays and on the coming sat and sun. My recommendations will go with "Moon and Cherry"(月とチェリー / Tsuki to Cherry, "Tokyo Marigold"(東京マリーゴールド) and "Life can be so Wonderful"(世界は時々美しい / Sekai wa tokidoki utsukushii). Who knows? You may catch me there at these screening.

* Some screening are free while others are not.
