BookCrossing

An interesting idea send to me by my US friend again.

http://www.bookcrossing.com

You can read all about it at the web. Basically its about givingaway your books, but you would like to know hows it doing after it leaves you. This web can help track it if the person who picked up log the book in. Its a pretty cool idea. Then I start to think what will happen in Singapore...

I leave the book at a park... Soon you see a junk collector comes.. Or worse, one of those newspaper hogging auntie or uncle just come along and pick it up and sell it for junk. I dread to think. In a place where there exist people who would even grab kilograms of FREE UNREAD newspaper just to sell them, I really wonder if this would even work here. FCS, I even need to have people distributing FREE newspaper in order to prevent against such.

Its pretty true that anything that is not nailed down will be taken. But I just wish the right person will pick it up and make use of it. I recycled my newspaper. Make me happy when I see someone else pick it up and read it. Just so little, I doubt I will save a tree or something, but it sure feels a lot better than to drop it into the rubbish bin.

Although I am skeptic about Bookcrossing in Singapore. I will no doubt try. Do it like an experiment and see what actually happens.

Backup Hell

Just came across an interesting video send to my by my friend from USA. Its basically a video to sell backup solution. Anyway its an interesting video which you can watch it at : http://www.backuptrauma.com

But which set me thinking... BACKUP. When do people really think about it. During lunchtime? Last thing at work before you knock off? OR must it be during the time when you boss have to call you and say : Houston, We got a problem...

This bring me to a story about the 9/11. Its a sadthing ok, but this untoldstory has to be some kind of joke really. There is a particular company which has datacenters and very well design disaster plans. The only problem was that their backup datacenter was in the other town... I guess it was after this that the word "Offsite Backup" took off.

Anyway, I will talk more about backup again someday since its one of the things I touch in my study for CISSP. For now, just keep that word somewhere in your head.

Bobi on Whale

Bobi is a Male Shih Tzu. I had been playing with him very often. One of the things I hadbeen trying very hard to do was to teach him how to play with the slide properly... He seems to have "Slidefobia" (unatural fear for slides). Well, I hope I will succeed someday. For the moment, I guess I have to be content with him playing on the whale at the playground. I wonder if he can play the see-saw :P

AutoGK Spyware

AutoGK is a nice package of tools that helps convert DVD->Divx/Xvid. However recently there has been some outroar abouthte newer 2.x beta which includes a Spyware known as DAE inside. The spyware occasionally pops up new windows on IE which I guess its pretty standard of all spywares.

Anyway, I figured I can help by writing this small installer which will help uninstall (irony :P) DAE from AutoGK. You can download it and let me know if you are happy with it.

A Lot Like Love

I am not a big fan of Romance movies. However I dint know what came over me and I just watched "A Lot like Love" tonight. Its because of Ashton Kutcher, Nah, Of course not. Strangley I did quite enjoy the show especially the way the story was told. Although pretty much was predictable and the trailer that flash occasionally on buses and tv has kinda spoilt all the surprises.

What set my brain spinning was the issue about Deaf people. I had worked with volunteers before... Ok, not that much, but at least I know that most of them are unable to speak properly because they cant even hear what they sound like. I know it would require very much training under special teacher if you really want to speak like Graham (Hope I got the name right) for a deaf person. Anyway that brings back the idea of learning sign language I had long ago. I said I am going to learn it someday... That was like a few years ago.
